Vancouver Bus Drivers are Rude

Travel Tip posted by cicero

Vancouver Bus drivers are on the whole rude and don't care if you are running for the door, they will probably drive off. Some are really nice but on the whole it isn't great. Also know if you need a ticket you won't get change on the bus and if you overpay there is no refund. So best to buy tickets before you get on or have a selection of change to use.

Pre-book your Newcastle airport parking if leaving the city to go within or away from the UK. This will save you both time and money at the airport gate.

Before taking a bicycle / cycle rickshaw in London get a price from the rider!

Travel Tip posted by cicero

If you are traveling to London and are anywhere around the Regent St, Soho, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square area then you will see a few bicycle taxis / pedicabs / rickshaws which will be happy to take you anywhere.

I know it looks romantic, even on a cold winters night but make sure you get a price BEFORE getting in the rickshaw. I have known many a person to get fleeced on these things but being over charged terribly.

In London stand on the right when on escalators

Travel Tip posted by cicero

With the millions of tourists traveling to London every year the transport system and public areas can get pretty crowded. To keep in good with the locals and allow people to get where they need to go in London stand to the right of the escalators. This allows a free space on the left for those keen enough or wanting to to get past and on their way.

It is not a matter of filling up every step as full as possible as some of the escalators in London, especially on the Tube can be quite long and you won't be popular if you can't get out of the way of the busy local trying to get up faster.

When travelling in London on the Tube have your Oyster Card ready at the Ticket Gates

Travel Tip posted by cicero

London is full of tourists all the time. And the locals find it pretty frustrating when visitors get to the London Underground (Tube) gates and then try to find their oyster card or train ticket. The ticket gates/turnstiles can move alot of people through fast so if you are traveling on the Tube have your ticket ready before you get to them.

London sightseeing - Open Top Bus Tours

Travel Tip posted by cicero

London City Sightseeing - If you only have a short period of sightseeing time in London one of the fastest ways to see everything is doing an open top bus tour. There are a couple of companies that do sightseeing bus tours in London. One is called The Original London Sightseeing Tour and the other is called Big Bus Tours. I can't recommend one of the other.

The London Underground (Tube) doesn't run all night long

Travel Tip posted by cicero

The Tube doesn't run all night long in London. So if you were expecting that London, being the vibing bustling metropolis, would have all night transport then sadly you are wrong. Be aware of this. Most trains have their last run between 12.30 - 1.00am. Don't get caught out as getting home otherwise can be a pain in the butt.

There are night buses if you are caught out after the Tube shuts but these are harder to work out and you may share the seat with an inebriated, smelly dude.

When travelling in London get an Oyster Card

Travel Tip posted by cicero

If you are traveling to London then you will need to get around once there. London has a prepay travel card system called the Oyster Card. The Oyster card is a blue card about the size of a credit card that you can buy and charge up with money. Then when traveling on the Tube or Bus network in London you simply swipe the card over the card readers and it will let you on, or in to the transport.

- Buses have the card reader in front of the Bus drivers window and it is Yellow.

On a budget in London? Cheap Bus tour is to take the 23 Bus through Central London

Travel Tip posted by cicero

Buses in London cost £1.50 at the time of posting. If you want to see a good amount of Central London on the cheap then the Bus number 23 from outside Paddington Train Station (ideally you will pick it up there as you get the full run) is a great way to go. If you can get a seat at the front of the Bus then you will have uninterrupted views as it takes you down Oxford St then Regent St, through Piccadilly Circus and more including Trafalgar Square. You can ride it even further, all the way down to St Pauls Cathedral and then get the Tube back, or a 23 Bus going in the other direction.

Unless your rich don't bother with a black cab from Heathrow to London

Travel Tip posted by cicero

Black Cabs are cool. No doubt. But Heathrow Airport is a long way from London so you will pay a fortune. So unless you are loaded or it is on the Company expense account take the Tube.

When in Hong Kong get an Octopus Travel card

Travel Tip posted by wilbur

The Octopus travel card is a prepay card you can get anywhere. It is the only way to travel on the MTR. If you are there for 3 days and expect to do a lot of traveling you should get good use out of a three day Travel Card with a return trip to the airport on it. The Train from the Airport is great and is the fastest most comfortable way to travel. The staff are friendly anyway so you should have no problems.

Don't be afraid to buy your Octopus Card as you come out of customs and immigration - it is no more expensive than anywhere else.

You can get away with not paying for Buses in Barcelona

If you jump on the buses in Barcelona from the backdoors you can get away with standing innocently and not paying. Although I think if you don't pay for your bus fare than your not very cool.

Don't take the tube between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus

Travel Tip posted by cicero

Don't take the Tube between Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square as they are literally about 100 meters apart. By the time you get on the tube and off at the other stop you could have walked between the two more than once.

Taxis are quite cheap in Lisbon

Travel Tip posted by cicero

Taxis are quite cheap in Lisbon so don't worry if you have to stay a little way out of the center of town. In saying this, however, if you have to get one everyday to and from where you are going and you are staying a week it adds up. Ideally if you are there for a while stay close to
