There is a little secret spot. Not as secret as it used to be but still quite secret. There is alot of thermal activity between Rotorua and Taupo. Boiling mud, hot water lakes and hot water streams. There is one hot water stream that all the locals know you can swim in called Kerosene Creek. It's not super easy to find but here is the low down.

1: Don't put your head under the water - there is meant to be a bug in it that drives you mad or something...I'm sure it's not that bad but don't.

1.2: It's FREE!!

2: It's on Old Waiotapu Rd

3: Don't leave valuables in the car (don't worry youll be OK)

4: It is more fun at night but a torch to find your way down is easier

5: There might be others about but it's all about sharing and there is plenty of room for all.

I have attached what photos I could get from my phone and a google map for where it is.
When we were there recently it was cleaned up and looking good.

Driving Instructions - How to get to Kerosene Creek:

1: Firstly the road is near the bottom of a small dip in the highway
2: It is a left turn if you are heading to Taupo or a right turn if you are heading to Rotorua
3: The road is NOT sealed after about 100 meters but the road conditions are good. Take your time and don't think you just joined a Rally car race.
4: It is a good 10 minutes down the road and you will notice it as there is an obvious car park on the right of the road with some pine trees. When I say Car Park it is space for cars to park. It will feel like you are in the middle of the forest by this stage. There will be a sign on the right of the car park like the one in the photos.

After passing the SH38 junction to Murupara on SH5 from Rotorua, take the first turn left down Old Waiotapu Road. Kerosene Creek is 2km down the road.
