When in Hong Kong get an Octopus Travel card
The Octopus travel card is a prepay card you can get anywhere. It is the only way to travel on the MTR. If you are there for 3 days and expect to do a lot of traveling you should get good use out of a three day Travel Card with a return trip to the airport on it. The Train from the Airport is great and is the fastest most comfortable way to travel. The staff are friendly anyway so you should have no problems.
Don't be afraid to buy your Octopus Card as you come out of customs and immigration - it is no more expensive than anywhere else.
If your arriving from the Airport
1: As you leave immigration through the first glass doors on the left is the Octopus Counter - Buy it here. Get a travel card with a return Train trip to Airport on it.
2: When you come out look for the signs to the Train.
3: Get on train.
- If you are staying in Kowloon get off at the Kowloon stop (about 15-20 mins travel). From Kowloon they have free Shuttle Buses around Kowloon which is brilliant. There is an information counter if you get lost.
- If you are staying in Hong Kong stay on train till Hong Kong and get out. It is easy to get a taxi from there and most hotels will be within a cheap cab ride - $5-$10 USD.
Your Octopus can then be used to travel on the MTR but NOT the bus system. It also has your return Train journey to the Airport.
